Materials & tools
- Coriander seed sold for sowing
- Container with drainage holes and a saucer
- Suitable potting mix
- Small watering can
- Plant label and pencil
- Work tray
Step-by-step instructions
- Check the pot has open drainage holes and place it on a work tray. Fill with potting mix, leaving space below the rim for watering.
- Read the seed packet for sowing depth, spacing and your local planting season. Do not assume roasted or treated kitchen seeds will grow.
- Make shallow sowing holes or rows at the stated depth. Place the seeds without crowding and cover gently with potting mix.
- Water slowly until the mix is evenly moist and excess water drains. Empty standing water from the saucer.
- Label the pot with coriander and the sowing date. Choose a bright location suited to the packet’s guidance and your climate.
- Assign one person to check moisture regularly. Water when needed rather than on a rigid schedule, and record the first seedlings without promising a fixed sprouting date.
Good to know
- Use clean hands and tools, and wash hands after handling potting mix.
- Keep the mix moist rather than waterlogged.
- Treat the planting as a family activity, not a guarantee of prosperity.
