Step-by-step instructions

- Remove distracting clutter and keep the background simple. Secure any lightweight decoration with suitable fixings.
- Place a comfortable chair for elders or children and check the floor remains clear around it.
- Set the phone on a stable support. Frame a test shot and check that the timer gives everyone enough time to join.
- Adjust room lighting without trailing cables through the group. Use LEDs rather than candles as photo props.
- Invite the family for a short set of photographs. Ask before posting images publicly and offer to share privately with those who prefer it.
Good to know
- Do not place a phone or light on an unstable stack of objects.
- Keep valuables and personal paperwork out of the background.
- Let anyone opt out of being photographed.
