Materials & tools
- 1 wide stable watertight urli or bowl
- Clean water to a shallow level suitable for the bowl
- 1–2 bowls of fresh petals or small flower heads
- A cloth for drying spills
- Battery light outside the water (optional)
- Purpose-made floating candle (optional, separate supervised version)
Step-by-step instructions
- Wash the bowl and check for cracks or leaks. Choose a stable surface away from electricals, cloth edges and places where children or pets may knock it.
- Add a shallow layer of water without filling to the rim. Dry the outside and the surrounding surface.
- Place flower heads and petals loosely on the water. Leave visible gaps rather than packing the bowl completely.
- For the simplest version, place a battery light outside the bowl. Do not put an ordinary battery lamp into water.
- If using a purpose-made floating candle, follow its instructions and leave it clear of petals. An adult must supervise; skip open flame if there is any doubt about stability or separation.
- Check for spills and remove fading flowers. Empty the bowl when the display is finished rather than leaving water where it can be knocked over.
Good to know
- An oil diya that is not designed to float can tip or sink; do not use it as a floating candle.
- Keep the urli apart from mains lights and adaptors, even when the flowers look dry.
