Materials & tools
- Chalk or rice-flour paste suitable for the surface

Step-by-step instructions
- Ask your family where and how they usually display the motif. Choose a clear side area where the doorway can still open and people will not step on it.
- Test the chosen chalk or rice-flour paste on a discreet part of the surface. Use a board instead if the floor finish might stain or become slippery.
- Make a small paper template or practise the outlines on paper. Keep the pair of footprints simple and proportionate to the available space.
- Mark the outlines, then add a few toe dots with a small spoon or chalk. Follow your household’s orientation if it has one.
- Let any paste dry fully and keep the surrounding area free of loose powder, lamps and cables. Do not use the motif as a reason to block a walkway.
- After the occasion, clean gently using a method suitable for the surface and put reusable templates away.
Good to know
- Kumkum and coloured powders can stain; do not apply them to a delicate finish without checking suitability.
- This is an optional decoration. Follow your family’s practice rather than treating a design tutorial as puja vidhi.
