Reuse last year’s Dhanteras décor
Inspect, clean and regroup existing festive decorations into a small reusable Dhanteras display.
- Easy
- 30 min active
- Use what you have
- 6 steps
Reusing a few good pieces can save time, storage and unnecessary purchases. Start by checking the condition of decorations rather than repainting everything. Keep damaged electrical items out of use and reserve painted or ribbon-covered lamp shapes for LEDs only.
Keep ready
- Existing festive decorations
- Soft cleaning cloths
- Storage boxes
- Paper labels
- Optional ribbon for non-heated ornaments
- LED lamps for decorative holders
How to do it
- 1Unpack decorations on a clear table and sort into usable, repairable and damaged groups.
- 2Check lights and battery compartments for damage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take damaged electrical items out of use.
- 3Dust sturdy ornaments with a soft cloth and use only cleaning methods suitable for their finish. Dry pieces before storing or displaying.
- 4Choose one colour palette and group a few compatible pieces on a tray. Avoid covering every surface with leftover decorations.
- 5Add ribbon only to non-heated ornaments. Any painted or decorated craft lamp should use an LED, with spare batteries stored securely.
- 6Photograph the arrangement, then label boxes by area for easier packing away. Set aside pieces you no longer need for an appropriate reuse or disposal route.
Helpful tips 💡
- Do not repair mains wiring as a casual craft activity.
- Cracked lamp holders should not hold flames.
- Reuse does not require adding fresh paint or buying new accessories.
Plan ahead
Inspect stored decorations several days ahead so there is time to replace only what is actually needed. Keep cleanup boxes ready before the festival begins.
Common questions
Can I repaint an old oil diya and burn it again?
Use a repainted craft diya with an LED. Keep a separate plain lamp designed for burning oil if your household uses real flames.
