Reusable leaf-and-coin paper toran
Make a lightweight leaf-and-coin paper toran with knotted loops and secure doorway fixings for Dhanteras.
- Easy
- 45 min active
- Use what you have
- 6 steps
This reusable toran uses paper leaf and coin shapes to suggest a festive welcome. It avoids loose plant cuttings and makes a light project that can be stored flat. The decoration is an optional family craft; it does not promise prosperity or replace the doorway custom your household follows.
Keep ready
- Green and gold scrap card
- Cotton cord measured to the doorway
- Pencil and adult-handled scissors
- Hole punch
- Suitable removable hooks rated for the surface and load
- Ruler
How to do it
- 1Measure the doorway and mark a cord length that allows a short tie at each end. Plan the toran above head height with room for the door to open.
- 2Draw one leaf template and one coin-shaped circle. Trace eight leaves and four circles on card and cut them out.
- 3Punch a hole near the top of each shape, leaving a generous border so the card does not tear.
- 4Lay the shapes on a table in a repeated pattern. Tie each to the cord with a short loop, leaving even gaps.
- 5Attach the cord to suitable hooks and check each fixing. Keep the decoration away from lamps, fan blades and loose electrical wires.
- 6Open and close the door to check clearance. After the festival, take the toran down gently and store the card pieces flat.
Helpful tips 💡
- Adults should hang the toran; avoid standing on unstable furniture.
- Use paper coin shapes rather than real coins or heavy jewellery.
- Keep the cord out of young children’s reach.
Plan ahead
Cut the shapes a day ahead and hang the finished toran after cleaning. Allow time for any adhesive hook to set according to its packaging before adding the decoration.
