Flower urli with separate LED lights

Arrange a shallow flower urli with floating petals and dry LED lights beside the bowl for Dhanteras décor.

A low flower urli makes a useful centrepiece when it leaves enough room for the rest of the family setup. Keep ordinary battery lights outside the water and use petals rather than relying on a clay diya to float. The bowl should sit where children, pets and passing bags cannot knock it over.

Keep ready

  • Stable shallow urli or watertight bowl
  • Clean water
  • A small handful of fresh flower petals
  • Dry cloth and waterproof mat
  • 2–3 battery LED lights for placement outside the bowl

How to do it

  1. 1Test the empty bowl for wobbling or leaks and choose a sturdy surface away from the edge of the table.
  2. 2Put a waterproof mat underneath. Add a shallow layer of clean water, leaving plenty of space below the rim.
  3. 3Remove damaged petals and arrange a loose ring on the water. Start with fewer petals so the surface does not look crowded.
  4. 4Add a small cluster of a second colour near the centre. Leave some water visible to make the pattern clear.
  5. 5Place dry LED lights beside the bowl, outside any splash area. Do not put ordinary LEDs, clay diyas or electrical cables into the water.
  6. 6Wipe any spills and check that guests can move past comfortably. Empty the water and remove wilted petals when the display is finished.

Helpful tips 💡

  • Use a dry petal tray instead if an open water bowl is unsuitable.
  • A purpose-made floating candle requires its own instructions and adult supervision; it is not used in this craft.
  • Keep the arrangement low enough for conversation across a table.

Plan ahead

Clean the bowl ahead, then add water and flowers shortly before the gathering. Set aside a few minutes for emptying and drying it after the evening.

Common questions

Can I put a normal clay diya or LED tealight in the water?

No. Ordinary clay diyas and battery lights are not designed to float safely. This arrangement keeps LEDs dry beside the bowl.

How should I fit this project into my Dhanteras plan?
