Painted clay diyas for an LED display
Paint six clay diyas for a reusable LED display, with clear drying and setup steps before Dhanteras evening.

A small set of decorated clay diyas makes a manageable family craft. These painted lamps are for LEDs only: craft paint is not designed for burning oil or a hot wick. If your household observes Yama Deepam with a flame, keep a separate plain lamp made for that purpose and follow your family’s ritual practice.
Keep ready
- 6 clean unpainted clay diyas
- Water-based craft paint suitable for the participants’ ages
- Small brushes and a reusable water cup
- Newspaper or a washable work mat
- 6 small battery LED lights that fit the diyas
- Soft cloth
How to do it
- 1Check every diya for cracks or sharp edges. Wipe away dust with a barely damp cloth and allow the clay to dry before painting.
- 2Protect the table and choose two colours. Test a small patch so you can see how much paint the clay absorbs.
- 3Brush a thin coat onto the outside of each diya, leaving a clean base so it does not stick to the work surface.
- 4After the first coat dries as directed on the paint label, add a dot or line border. Use the same repeated pattern across the set.
- 5Allow all coats to dry and cure for the time on the paint packaging. Keep these lamps marked as decorative LED-only pieces.
- 6Fit the LED lights and arrange the set on a stable tray beside the entrance. An adult should secure any battery compartments and put spare batteries away.
Helpful tips 💡
- Use plain unpainted oil lamps separately for any flame-based observance.
- Give children large areas to paint while adults handle batteries.
- Do not add glitter or loose beads around a lamp.
Plan ahead
Allow fifty minutes of hands-on work plus the paint manufacturer’s drying and curing time. Paint on an earlier day if the display is needed for the evening puja.
Common questions
Can I burn oil in these painted diyas?
This tutorial uses LEDs. Keep painted craft lamps away from heat and use a separate unpainted diya designed for oil if your family wants a real flame.
