Decorative candle arrangement

Group candles in separate stable holders with clear space around each flame for a small Diwali table display.

Let’s make this →

A candle arrangement should begin with its holders and clearances, not loose flowers around a flame. Use the candle and holder manufacturer’s guidance, keep paper and fabric away, and choose battery candles where the table is crowded or children and pets can reach the display.

Materials

  • 2–3 candles with compatible stable holders, or battery candles
  • A stable non-flammable tray if required by the holders
  • A clear level surface outside the dining reach area
  • Manufacturer’s candle and holder instructions
  • Long lighter or matches, adult-handled

Steps

  1. 1Read the instructions and inspect holders for damage. Choose a level location away from draughts, curtains, serving dishes and the table edge.
  2. 2Set each candle in its own holder. Leave clear space between holders and surrounding objects according to their instructions.
  3. 3Keep dried flowers, leaves, paper confetti and loose fabric outside the flame and heat area. Use an uncluttered tray rather than filling it with flammable accents.
  4. 4Test the arrangement unlit by checking stability and the route people use around the table. Move it if guests need to lean over it.
  5. 5An adult lights the candles only when someone can supervise continuously. Use battery candles if the arrangement cannot be watched.
  6. 6Extinguish before leaving the room, moving holders or clearing the table. Let everything cool before storing or changing candles.

Helpful tips 💡

  • Do not carry a lit candle tray through a gathering.
  • Battery candles can give a similar grouping effect where real flames are unsuitable.

Plan ahead

Arrange and inspect holders before guests arrive, with an adult responsible for lighting and extinguishing. Leave the table layout practical for food and conversation rather than filling every gap with decoration.

Common questions

Can flowers touch the candle holders?

Keep any combustible decoration outside the flame and heat clearance required by the products. An uncluttered layout is easier to supervise.

Should I move the candles when dinner starts?

Extinguish them and allow holders to cool before moving. Plan a position outside the serving area so this is usually unnecessary.
