Paint & decorate diyas
Paint the outside of six clay diyas, let the finish cure and use small LEDs for a reusable Diwali display.
- Easy
- 45 min active
- Reuse first; cost depends on materials
- 6 steps
Allow additional drying time for wet paint, glue or paste.
This diya-painting project is for decorative lamps with battery-operated LEDs. Paint, glue and craft accents are not automatically suitable for heat or food contact. Keep real oil lamps plain and separate, and allow the paint manufacturer’s full drying or curing time before placing the finished craft.
Materials
- 6 plain clay diyas, clean and dry
- Water-based craft paint in 2 colours
- 1 medium and 1 fine brush
- Newspaper or a reusable work mat
- Small battery-operated LEDs sized to fit the diyas
- A stable display tray
Steps
- 1Wipe dust from the diyas and check for cracks or sharp chips. Put them on a protected work surface and decide which side will face the room.
- 2Paint a thin base coat on the outer surface. Keep the inside and the rim where the LED rests free of thick paint, glue or loose accents.
- 3Follow the paint label for drying between coats. Add a simple border of dots or short strokes with the fine brush rather than using bulky decoration.
- 4Leave the diyas on a level tray until the finish is fully dry or cured as instructed. The forty-five-minute estimate covers active work, not every drying interval.
- 5Check that each LED fits without making the lamp unstable. An adult should handle small batteries and keep them inaccessible to children.
- 6Group the finished lamps on a stable dry tray, away from walkways. Use them as a decoration and keep any separately lit plain diyas under adult supervision.
Helpful tips 💡
- Acrylic paint or craft glue does not make a clay lamp flame-safe. Use LEDs in this decorated set.
- A limited colour palette keeps the small lamps clear and lets beginners finish comfortably.
Plan ahead
Paint the lamps a day or more before display if the product label requires it. Keep batteries and small parts with an adult, photograph your arrangement if helpful and store fully cured lamps in a dry box after the festival.
Common questions
Can I burn oil in these painted diyas?
This tutorial is designed for LEDs. Do not assume a craft-painted or glued lamp is safe for an open flame; use a separate plain lamp suitable for oil lighting.
How long should painted diyas dry?
Use the paint or adhesive label for drying and curing. The active crafting estimate does not replace the manufacturer’s instructions.
