Diwali wall and door décor

Make a light reusable paper-and-cord wall accent with repeated shapes and suitable wall fixings.

  • Easy
  • 45 min active
  • Reuse first; cost depends on materials
  • 6 steps

Allow additional drying time for wet paint, glue or paste.

Let’s make this →

This wall decoration uses one short row of repeated paper shapes instead of a heavy flower-and-light backdrop. A simple design is easier to hang, reuse and remove. Choose fixings suited to your wall and keep the decoration outside the heat area of lamps, cooking and electrical equipment.

Materials

  • 6–8 large paper or thin-card shapes
  • 1 metre light cord or strong ribbon
  • Ruler, pencil and scissors
  • Child-safe glue or tape
  • 2 suitable removable hooks or existing fixings
  • A protected work surface

Steps

  1. 1Measure the intended wall space and check that the decoration will not block a door, switch or walkway.
  2. 2Draw one large diya, leaf or circle template and use it for all the shapes. An adult handles cutting if children are helping.
  3. 3Arrange the pieces in a repeated colour pattern on the table before attaching them. Keep the spacing even and the overall weight light.
  4. 4Attach each shape to the cord with a folded paper tab or tape, checking both sides. Follow the adhesive’s drying instructions.
  5. 5Secure the two cord ends to suitable fixings and test gently. Keep clear of candles, hot surfaces and any pinched or exposed wires.
  6. 6After the celebration, remove carefully, wipe only as suitable for the material and store flat in a labelled dry folder.

Helpful tips 💡

  • Reuse card from clean packaging when it is strong enough and free of grease.
  • Do not assume removable adhesive is suitable for every painted wall; check the label and a discreet area first.

Plan ahead

Prepare the template early and divide marking, cutting and arranging among helpers. Allow additional glue drying time before hanging and keep any optional fresh flowers separate so the paper can be stored dry.

Common questions

How can I make this wall decoration reusable?

Use sturdy paper, a simple cord attachment and a dry display area. Store the shapes flat and replace only any damaged part next year.

Can I hang it above lit diyas?

Keep paper and cord clear of flame and rising heat. Choose a separate wall zone rather than using it directly above candles or oil lamps.
