Mehndi cone technique for beginners

Practise dots, lines, curves and leaves on paper before attempting a full design.

  • Easy
  • 15 min active time
  • Use what you have
  • 6 steps

Before you begin

Steady pressure and a comfortable grip help make cleaner mehndi lines. They do not guarantee a particular stain colour. This short practice session stays on paper so you can learn the movement without repeatedly working over a skin design.

Keep ready

  • Clearly labelled henna cone for paper practice
  • Plain paper and a spare scrap sheet
  • Tissues
  • Flat table and comfortable chair

How to do it

  1. 1Read the product directions and check that the cone is intact. Set the paper flat and support your forearm on the table.
  2. 2Hold the cone comfortably near the tip without squeezing hard. Test a small dot on scrap paper.
  3. 3Make a row of dots using brief, even pressure, lifting cleanly after each one.
  4. 4Draw short straight lines and gentle curves, moving your whole hand steadily rather than dragging the tip through paste.
  5. 5Practise leaves by starting with a dot, easing pressure and lifting to a pointed end.
  6. 6Combine one curved line, four leaves and a few dots into a small vine. Stop and compare the spacing before trying another.

Helpful tips 💡

  • Practise a few short shapes well rather than filling a whole page quickly.
  • A leaking or damaged cone is difficult to control; replace it instead of squeezing harder.

Plan ahead & keep for later

Practise before the planned application day. Store and dispose of the product according to its label rather than assuming all cones have the same shelf life.

Check products before skin application and allow extra drying time. Read the mehndi aftercare guide. FDA henna guidance.

Common questions

Why are my cone lines uneven?

Pressure, speed or hand support may be changing. Work on short paper lines, support your forearm and practise a comfortable consistent movement.

Will better cone technique make the stain darker?

Technique changes the line shape, not a guaranteed colour. Stain development varies with the product and individual skin; avoid harsh darkening shortcuts.
