Children’s activity

A safe Dhanteras activity for kids

Let children take part without going near a flame: paint the diyas, count out the Yama Deepam set, and hear the Dhanvantari story.

  • 🎨 Paint a few clay diyas (wick area kept clear).
  • 🔢 Count out the Yama Deepam lamps together.
  • 📖 A short, child-friendly retelling of the churning of the ocean.
  • 🪔 An adult lights the lamps while the children watch.

Do’s & don’ts

Keep the evening calm and safe

Do

  • ✓Start the puja within your city’s Pradosh Kaal window.
  • ✓Keep the home entrance and puja corner clean and stable.
  • ✓Let children take safe roles — painting diyas and offering flowers.
  • ✓Pray for health and sufficiency, your family’s wellbeing.

Avoid

  • ✕Never leave a lit diya or the Yama Deepam flame unattended.
  • ✕Do not treat the “buy or be unlucky” framing as a rule; choose within your budget.
  • ✕Do not rush the puja; a settled, short ritual is better than a long hurried one.
  • ✕Do not pressure anyone who cannot take part.

Plan the puja around your household’s practice

Prepare a stable prayer space, gather the materials your family uses and confirm the local date and puja window. The displayed reviewed timing identifies its city and source; it is not a timetable for every location. Prayer texts, lamp counts and the order of worship should follow your trusted family or community source.

Can I use the New Delhi timing in another city?

Check a panchang for your own city and the correct year. Local sunset and calendar calculations affect the window, so use the reviewed New Delhi example only for its stated location and confirm your family’s practice.
