Before you begin
A chalni can carry a small gift for presentation and later return to its role as a sieve. Decorate the outer rim, keep the mesh open and remove the contents before moon viewing. Avoid glue or paint on surfaces that may contact food.
Keep ready
1 clean chalni (sieve)
Ribbon or cotton cord
2–3 lightweight artificial flowers
Small fabric pouch for a wrapped gift
Scissors
How to do it
1Clean and dry the chalni; inspect the rim for sharp edges. Decide how you will hold it during moon viewing.
2Measure ribbon around the outer rim, leaving enough length for a bow, and cut it.
3Wrap the ribbon around the outside, keeping the handle and mesh clear. Tie rather than glue the ends.
4Tie a small flower cluster to one side, away from the grip. Check that the ties do not protrude into the mesh.
5Place a lightweight, separately wrapped gift in a fabric pouch inside the sieve for presentation.
6Remove the gift and pouch before use. Lift the chalni to eye level and check that the mesh and grip remain unobstructed.
Helpful tips 💡
Keep the decoration lightweight so it does not twist the sieve in your hand.
A detachable bow makes cleaning and reuse easier than glued embellishments.
Plan ahead & keep for later
Decorate a day ahead and keep the sieve dry. Pack the gift separately if it is heavy or contains perishable food.
Common questions
Should I cover the chalni mesh with fabric?
Keep the mesh open for moon viewing. A pouch used for gift presentation should be removed before the sieve is used.
Can the decorated chalni still be used in the kitchen?
Remove the decorations first and clean it appropriately. Do not put craft glue or paint on food-contact surfaces.
