Before you begin
A dry-fruit platter adds variety to the Karva Chauth table without cooking. This example is for six people to share alongside other dishes, not six complete meals. Use ready-to-eat products and keep each variety separate so people can choose what suits them.
Ingredients 🧂
- ¼ cup ready-to-eat almonds
- ¼ cup ready-to-eat cashews
- ¼ cup shelled pistachios
- 6 pitted dates
- 6 dried figs, stalks removed
- 2 tbsp raisins
Method 👩🍳
- 1Check the packets for freshness, storage directions and allergy information. Use clean, completely dry bowls and utensils.
- 2Inspect ready-to-eat nuts and dried fruit and discard any damaged or mouldy pieces. Remove date pits and tough fig stalks.
- 3Keep nuts and dried fruit in separate small bowls; cut large dates or figs into smaller pieces for adult portions if desired.
- 4Arrange the bowls on a tray and add simple labels, especially for the different nuts.
- 5Cover the platter and place it away from steam, direct sunlight and nearby wet foods.
- 6Offer small portions with the rest of the sargi spread. Choose age-appropriate alternatives for young children rather than whole nuts.
Helpful tips 💡
- Do not wash packaged ready-to-eat nuts merely to assemble the platter; added moisture affects storage.
- If you prefer soaked almonds, prepare them separately and refrigerate them; do not mix them into a dry make-ahead tray.
Make ahead & storage
Portion unopened dry products the evening before and cover well. Follow each packet’s storage instructions; keep soaked nuts or cut fresh fruit refrigerated separately.
Keep dairy and cooked food refrigerated at 4°C or below. Refrigerate within two hours, or one hour in temperatures above 32°C. Food storage guidance.
Common questions
Do the nuts need soaking?
Soaking is optional and is not needed for this dry platter. If your family likes soaked almonds, serve them in a separate refrigerated bowl.
How do I make a nut-free platter?
Leave out all nuts and choose dried fruit whose packaging suits the person’s allergies. Use separate clean utensils and check for cross-contact warnings.
