Explore Kyoto one neighbourhood at a time. Early starts at popular sights and a slower afternoon help balance temple visits, food and the everyday life of a city that is also home to local residents.

Getting there

Compare flights to Kansai (KIX) with an onward rail transfer to Kyoto. If arriving through Tokyo, include the additional intercity journey in both time and budget.

02

Higashiyama

Explore temple streets respectfully, following signs about photography and private lanes.

03

Arashiyama

Memorable experiences

01

A tea experience

Reserve a session that explains the etiquette and confirm the language and duration.

02

Neighbourhood dining

Pick a small area for dinner and check booking requirements rather than travelling across the city hungry.

What’s around?

Uji

An appealing tea-focused outing with riverside scenery.

02

Nara

A separate day trip; follow local guidance around deer and keep food secured.

Best time to visit Kyoto

Spring and autumn for seasonal scenery

Blossom and leaf-colour timing varies. Summer can be hot and humid; winter needs warm layers. Popular seasonal dates can be busy.

Choose dates around the experiences you want. Check the forecast and current opening arrangements close to departure.

A little adventure

Choose a longer marked walk only if the group is comfortable with steps and weather. For an easier active day, use riverside routes and frequent breaks.

Make it your Kyoto trip

A relaxed starting itinerary

  1. Arrive and explore the area around your stay.
  2. Start early in Higashiyama and leave the afternoon relaxed.
  3. Visit Arashiyama on a separate day, then choose Fushimi Inari or Uji.

Where to stay

Kyoto Station is practical for transfers; a central base may reduce daily travel. Confirm room size, luggage storage and lift access.

Plan your budget

  • Compare individual rail fares before buying a pass.
  • Include airport transfers and any intercity rail legs.
  • Book popular seasonal accommodation early and check meal inclusions.

Add flights, accommodation, meals and a contingency before setting your activity budget.

Travelling as a family?

Alternate temple visits with parks and rest. Many historic sites have steps or gravel, so choose stroller routes carefully.
