Pre-Puja cleaning checklist

A calm, room-by-room reset before décor and Lakshmi Puja. Finish the dusty work early so the evening can stay unhurried.

Finish the dusty jobs before setting up food, flowers and the puja space. This checklist prioritises the entrance, a stable prayer area and the family gathering corner, with a clear stop point so cleaning does not occupy the whole festival day. Share tasks and reuse clean supplies where suitable.

Keep ready

  • Cloths and a gentle cleaner
  • Broom or vacuum
  • Small basket for items to put away
  • Fresh cloth for the chowki
  • Waste and donation bags

Step by step

  1. 1Start with the entrance: clear shoes, wipe the threshold and create a safe place for rangoli.
  2. 2Move room by room. Dust high surfaces first, then wipe shelves, windowsills and floors.
  3. 3Clear the puja area completely. Wash or wipe the chowki and set aside a clean cloth.
  4. 4Check lights, extension leads and diya locations. Keep wires away from walkways and curtains.
  5. 5Put away clutter, separate donations and stop when the home feels welcoming—not perfect.
  6. 6Do a final sweep on the morning of puja, then reserve time for bathing, dressing and family preparation.

Helpful notes

  • Use a shared family list so cleaning does not fall on one person.
  • Avoid mixing cleaning chemicals and keep products away from children.

Plan ahead

Divide rooms and roles before starting. Keep cleaners labelled, follow their instructions, avoid mixing products and leave time for surfaces to dry before placing cords, lamps or rangoli. Store cleaning materials away from food and children.

Common questions

Which rooms should I clean first for Diwali?

Start with the entrance and planned prayer and gathering spaces, then handle other rooms as time allows. Dust high surfaces before finishing floors to avoid repeating work.

When should decoration go up?

Complete cleaning and let surfaces dry first. Then inspect fixings and lights and arrange decor without blocking the door, plugs or walking routes.
