Set up the Puja Chowki

Set up a stable, uncluttered puja chowki that lets everyone participate comfortably.

A practical puja chowki leaves room for the idols or images, small offering bowls and the people who gather around it. Stability, a clear approach and separation from flame matter more than covering every surface. Use your family’s customary arrangement without balancing items on makeshift supports.

Keep ready

  • Stable chowki or low table
  • Clean cloth
  • Lakshmi-Ganesha idols
  • Kalash and diya
  • Flowers and small offering bowls

Step by step

  1. 1Choose a clean, well-lit place away from door swings and narrow walkways.
  2. 2Cover the chowki neatly and check that it does not wobble.
  3. 3Place the idols with enough space for offerings and aarti.
  4. 4Keep flame, incense and camphor on a stable tray with ventilation.
  5. 5Place flowers, water and prasad where children and elders can reach safely.

Helpful notes

  • Do not place diyas beneath curtains, shelves or loose fabric.
  • Leave clear space around the chowki for family members to sit.

Plan ahead

Clean the chosen surface and check that the table does not wobble before adding the cloth. Arrange the bowls while everything is unlit, choose comfortable seating and keep a separate stable flame-safe area for lamps.

Common questions

Can I use a small table instead of a traditional chowki?

Choose a clean stable surface that suits your family practice and leaves comfortable space for offerings and participation. Confirm ritual preferences with your household.

Where should the diya go relative to the cloth?

Use a suitable stable non-flammable holder, away from loose cloth and other combustible material. Follow the lamp’s instructions and keep it supervised rather than placing it directly on fabric.
