Create a coordinated set of clay diyas for an LED-lit puja corner or festive table.

Use what you have
6 steps
Before you begin
This craft uses painted diyas as holders for small battery lights. It avoids burning oil or a wick against craft paint, glitter or glue. Choose two colours from your thali or outfit and repeat a simple border across the set.
Keep ready
4 clean, dry clay diyas
Water-based craft paint
Small paintbrush
4 battery-operated LED lights that fit securely
Newspaper and a cloth
How to do it
1Clean and dry the diyas. Set them on newspaper and check that each sits flat without wobbling.
2Choose a base colour and one accent colour; sketch a short dotted or scalloped border on the exterior.
3Paint a thin exterior coat, keeping the inside free of decoration, and dry according to the paint label.
4Add dots or petals around the outside edge. Keep the pattern consistent so the set looks coordinated.
5Allow all paint to dry fully before placing the battery lights inside. Do not force a light into a narrow diya.
6Arrange on a stable tray, check that the lights cannot tip out, and switch them off after use.
Helpful tips 💡
Use these decorated lamps with LEDs; craft paint and embellishments may be unsuitable near flame.
Keep button batteries and small lights out of children’s reach.
Plan ahead & keep for later
Paint the day before and allow additional drying time. Remove the lights before packing the dry diyas with reusable padding.
Common questions
Can I light a wick in a painted diya?
This project is designed for LEDs. For an oil flame, use a separate undecorated lamp intended for burning oil and keep it clear of craft materials.
What is a simple pattern for beginners?
Use one exterior base colour with evenly spaced dots around the edge. A matching set looks finished without intricate painting.
