Start in Srinagar and choose one mountain base for a gentler Kashmir trip. A lake outing, garden visit and a couple of slow scenic days can be more rewarding than changing hotels every night.

Getting there

Srinagar is the main flight gateway for this itinerary. Leave spare time for airport procedures and avoid a long mountain transfer immediately before departure.

Things to see & do

01

Dal Lake

Agree the duration, route and full price of a shikara ride in advance; ask for appropriately sized life jackets.

02

Mughal gardens

Choose a small number of gardens and leave time to enjoy them; flowering and autumn colour vary by season.

03

Old Srinagar

Explore craft traditions and local food with a knowledgeable local guide, respecting prayer times and photography rules.

Memorable experiences

01

A slow lake morning

Schedule the outing around weather and your family’s routine, keeping the rest of the morning flexible.

02

Discover local crafts

Learn about papier-mâché and textiles; compare quality and authenticity before a large purchase.

What’s around?

01

Gulmarg

Plan a mountain stay or a full day; gondola tickets, operations and weather require advance checking.

02

Pahalgam

Use it as a separate base for valley scenery rather than racing there and back with several other stops.

Best time to visit Kashmir

Spring for gardens; summer for valley outings; autumn for colour

Winter changes access and activity options. Check current local advisories, road access and weather before confirming the route.

Choose dates around the experiences you want. Check the forecast and current opening arrangements close to departure.

A little adventure

Use authorised operators for mountain activities. High-altitude outings need a slower pace; confirm suitability for your group and current conditions locally.

Make it your Kashmir trip

A relaxed starting itinerary

  1. Spend the first two days in Srinagar with a lake outing and gardens.
  2. Choose Gulmarg or Pahalgam for two nights, leaving one flexible day.
  3. Return to Srinagar ahead of your flight rather than relying on a same-day mountain transfer.

Where to stay

Compare a Srinagar hotel with a houseboat stay. For houseboats, ask about access, heating, bathroom facilities and safe boarding for children.

Plan your budget

  • Ask whether local sightseeing vehicles are included or charged separately.
  • Separate gondola, guide, activity and transfer costs from the hotel quote.
  • Prefer clear cancellation terms for weather-sensitive plans.

Add flights, accommodation, meals and a contingency before setting your activity budget.

Travelling as a family?

Choose fewer hotel moves, warm layers and easy access to meals. Confirm heating and boarding arrangements before travelling with a baby.
