Explore Shimla

Build a hill holiday around short walks, heritage buildings and time together. Shimla works best when you leave breathing room between sightseeing stops instead of trying to cover every nearby town.

Getting there

Compare Chandigarh flights with an onward road transfer, or check limited Shimla flight options. The Kalka–Shimla railway is a slower, scenic alternative; reserve seats separately.

Things to see & do

01

The Ridge & Mall Road

Allow a relaxed afternoon for views, cafés and heritage façades. Wear shoes with grip for sloping lanes.

02

Viceregal Lodge area

Set aside a half-day for heritage and gardens; check current entry and tour arrangements.

03

Jakhu Temple

Plan a morning visit and check the ropeway or road approach. Keep food and loose belongings secured around monkeys.

Memorable experiences

01

Ride the mountain railway

Make the train journey part of the holiday, rather than combining it with a packed sightseeing day.

02

Browse Lakkar Bazaar

Look for wooden souvenirs and pause for a warm drink; agree prices before purchasing.

What’s around?

01

Mashobra

A quieter forest-side outing; combine a walk and lunch rather than a long driving circuit.

02

Kufri & Narkanda

Choose one based on your available time. Narkanda works better as an overnight extension than a hurried add-on.

Best time to visit Shimla

March–June for walks; October–November for crisp days

Winter can bring snow and slippery roads; snow is never guaranteed. During the monsoon, check road conditions before setting out.

Choose dates around the experiences you want. Check the forecast and current opening arrangements close to departure.

A little adventure

Choose an established guide for forest walks. Winter activities depend on snow, operator availability and road access; check these before paying.

Make it your Shimla trip

A relaxed starting itinerary

  1. Arrive, settle in and take an easy Mall Road walk.
  2. Visit the heritage area, then leave the afternoon for cafés and the Ridge.
  3. Choose Mashobra or Kufri, with a buffer for hill traffic.

Where to stay

Stay near the Mall for walking access, or choose Mashobra for a quieter base. Confirm vehicle drop-off, stairs and the walk from the parking area.

Plan your budget

  • Price the airport transfer before choosing a cheaper flight.
  • Compare hotels including heating, breakfast and parking.
  • Keep separate allowances for the railway, local taxis and entry tickets.

Add flights, accommodation, meals and a contingency before setting your activity budget.

Travelling as a family?

Slopes and stairs make a baby carrier useful. Keep arrival day light and ask the hotel about heating and lift access.
