Eco-friendly mini Ravana: display-only craft

Make a tabletop Ravana craft for a Dussehra school project or family storytelling session.

  • Easy with adult help
  • About 40 min plus drying
  • Use what you own; check local prices
  • 6 steps

Make a tabletop Ravana craft for a Dussehra school project or family storytelling session. A cardboard tube forms the body and ten drawn faces introduce the character without building an outdoor effigy. Keep the design light, flat-backed and easy for a child to colour with an adult helping with cutting.

Keep ready

  • Cardboard tube
  • Coloured paper
  • Child-safe glue
  • Markers

How to do it

  1. 1Wrap a cardboard tube in coloured paper.
  2. 2Draw ten stylised faces on paper; arrange them in two rows of five on the backing.
  3. 3Glue the faces to a flat card backing.
  4. 4Attach the backing to the tube and add paper clothing.
  5. 5Stand the figure on a wide base and display away from heat.
  6. 6Gently test the finished figure on its base. If it leans, shorten the backing or widen the card base rather than adding heavy decorations.

Helpful tips 💡

  • Never burn this craft or add fireworks, fuel or ignition materials.
  • Draw ten small faces in two rows of five on one broad backing. Count them before gluing, then centre the backing over the tube so the figure does not topple.

Plan ahead

Save one clean cardboard tube, two sheets of card and scrap coloured paper. Draw the ten faces in advance for younger children; leave the assembly until everyone can sit at a covered table.
