Light diyas together
Make the first lighting a calm family ritual, with safe roles for children, elders and guests.

- Steps

Plan family diya lighting as a short activity with secure lamp positions and clearly divided roles. Adults handle fuel and fire, while children can count or arrange unlit lamps on a cool tray. The aim is a shared pause, not carrying lit lamps through a crowded home for a photo.

How to do it
- 1
Choose safe locations
Place lamps on stable, non-flammable surfaces away from curtains, paper, wires and walkways.
- 2
Prepare the lamps
Check for cracks, add a small amount of oil or ghee and position each wick securely.
- 3
Give everyone a role
Adults handle flames; children can count lamps or arrange unlit diyas on a cool tray under supervision. Do not let children carry lit lamps.
- 4
Light together
Light the first diya, move through the home as a family and extinguish lamps safely when finished.
Helpful tips 💡
- Use battery lamps where open flame is not suitable.
- Never leave diyas unattended around children or pets.
Plan ahead
Set up while lamps are cool and unlit, check doorways and assign one adult to supervision and extinguishing. Keep decorations away from heat and make an LED alternative ready for unsuitable spaces.
Common questions
What can children do when lighting diyas?
They can choose an unlit arrangement, count lamps or decorate a separate LED display under supervision. Adults should handle fuel, flame, matches and hot holders.
Can I leave a diya burning while we visit relatives?
Do not leave it unattended. Extinguish safely and let the holder cool before leaving; use an appropriate battery decoration if you want light during an unattended period.
