4 small bowls

About 15 min total elapsed time. Times are estimates; already boiled ingredients need separate preparation.

This fruit chaat is assembled just before serving so it stays fresh and does not collect too much juice. Use whichever seasonal fruit your household enjoys. Packaged chaat masala can contain ingredients outside your fasting practice, so the basic method uses separately chosen seasonings.

Ingredients 🧂

  • Assorted fruit (banana, apple, pomegranate)3 cups prepared fruit
  • Lemon juice1–2 tsp
  • Sendha namaka small pinch, adjust to taste
  • Black pepper (optional)a small pinch
  • Roasted cumin (optional)¼ tsp, if used at home
  • Coriander (optional)1 tbsp, chopped

Method 👨‍🍳

  1. 1

Wash whole fruit under running water and use a clean board and knife.

  2. 2

Peel fruit as needed, remove cores and seeds, and cut into manageable bite-size pieces.

  3. 3

Keep banana until the end so it does not soften while the other fruit is prepared.

  4. 4

Mix lemon juice with your chosen salt and optional pepper or cumin, using a light hand.

  5. 5

Toss the fruit gently just before serving and add optional chopped coriander.

  6. 6

Divide into four small bowls and serve promptly. Refrigerate cut fruit if the serving time changes.

💡 Pro tips

  • Use whole spices individually if a packaged masala does not fit your food rules.
  • Do not add salt hours ahead: it draws juice from the fruit.

Plan ahead

Wash whole fruit and set out bowls ahead. Refrigerate cut fruit and add banana and seasonings close to serving.

Common questions

Is packaged chaat masala needed?

No. Lemon, a little sendha namak and any individual seasonings you use at home are enough.

Can I make fruit chaat the night before?

For the best texture, cut and season close to serving. If preparing some fruit earlier, keep it refrigerated and add banana and salt later.
