Let's make this

This Navratri diya craft decorates clay lamps for use with small battery-operated lights. Craft paint, adhesive and embellishments are not automatically suitable near burning oil or a wick. Choose two or three colours and repeat one simple motif across six diyas; allow the paint and glue their full labelled drying time.

🛠️ Step-by-step guide

6 simple steps

Clean & prep the diyas1

Clean & prep the diyas

Wipe the clay diyas clean of any kiln dust using a soft dry cloth.

Apply base coats2

Apply base coats

Paint the outside with a thin base coat, leaving the interior undecorated. Let the paint dry according to its label before adding another coat.

Detail with fine brush3

Detail with fine brush

Use a fine brush for dots and petals on the exterior. Keep the pattern consistent across the set and the inner cup clear.

Affix mirrors & stones4

Affix mirrors & stones

Attach only small, flat accents on the outside. Press edges down and keep the opening clear for an LED light.

Cure & dry5

Cure & dry

Allow the full drying time specified by the paint and glue manufacturers. The hands-on estimate does not include drying.

Arrange & illuminate

Place each dry diya on a stable tray and add a securely fitting LED light. Keep batteries and small parts away from children; use a separate undecorated oil lamp if needed for puja.

Plan ahead

Paint and decorate before the celebration, then allow the full drying time on each product label. Remove LED lights before storing the diyas with padding in a dry box.

Common questions

Can I burn oil in these painted diyas?

This craft uses LEDs. Keep a separate undecorated lamp intended for burning oil if your household needs a flame for puja.

How long must painted diyas dry?

Follow the paint and glue labels. The 30-minute craft estimate does not include drying, and a fixed two-hour wait is not correct for every product.
